The Story Writing in Remote Locations (SWIRL) program at Victoria University has been successfully running for nearly 25 years thanks to lecturer Lawry Mahon.
It came about when Mahon realised how culturally inaccurate most children’s literature texts were within Aboriginal communities. SWIRL aims to engage remote Aboriginal children in traditional and contemporary activities.
About 20 Victoria University Bachelor of Education (P-12) students are chosen each year for a five-week placement that takes them to remote Northern Territory communities to help Indigenous children create books that are reflective of their own experiences and cultures.
Those Pre-Service Teachers who are selected for the SWIRL program are in the extremely fortunate position to learn an invaluable amount from the students they are working with.
The following collection of stories were created by the fantastic cohort of students at Belyuen School.
